The Super Bowl was first played after the 1966 season, when the AFL and the NFL contested Super Bowl I for the rights to the best professional football team in the country. Since that time there have been 20 different franchises win the title, with 12 never winning the big game.
The Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and Tennessee Titans have all won AFL or NFL championships prior to the creation of the Super Bowl, but have never won the big game since it was created. The Vikings, Bills, Bengals, Falcons, Cardinals, Panthers, Titans and Chargers have all appeared in games, but failed to win.
